God created mankind in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27). The Bible makes it clear that the basis of God’s character is love, so developing Godly love is to be our primary focus in life as followers of Christ. The entire universe has been finely tuned to facilitate a life that can choose to develop this character trait.
There are 4 main forces at play in the universe. Two of them are gravity and electromagnetism. It is obvious that a lot of thought and effort has gone into balancing these two out.
Gravity is a very weak force; you need something the size of planet earth for gravity to be strong enough to keep something as small as a human attached to it. Electromagnetism is extraordinarily strong; it is the force that keeps two hydrogen atoms bound to one oxygen atom, thus making a water molecule. The human body is made up of 60% water. When we slow down and look, we can see that there are a lot of forces at play in our lives. These forces all balance out so that we can think and reason; ultimately, so that when given the choice between death and eternal life, we can choose life – Gods way of life.
God’s loving character is something we must learn by living it. Since we are physical and God is spiritual, we naturally see the physical things in our life as more important, more real, more tangible than the spiritual. Nonetheless, we are to take the time out of physical life each day to pray and study; to focus on the spiritual relationship with our creator.
Just as creation keeps forces in balance, we are to find balance in our lives. We are to focus our minds and give attention to developing Godly love in our lives. Zephaniah 1:14-15 shows us what is going to happen to the physical things in our lives: devastation and desolation, darkness and gloominess. This is the future for the physical aspects of our lives.
God’s loving character is not physical; it is a way of thinking. Yes, for now, while we are physical, His character manifests itself in physical ways – our conduct, our words, our actions – but it’s happening in our minds, it’s changing how we think of ourselves and of others. This character will not be affected by devastation or desolation.
We have been given a peek into the distant future via an amazing scripture, Isaiah 34:4: “The heavens rolled up as a scroll…” This is what’s in store for this planet and the entire creation. When there is no need for the forces that bind this universe to give us physical life, when all mankind has chosen Godly character – and thus eternal life, living God’s way – then the entire creation is rolled up like a scroll. Once this occurs, all that’s left is character.
